1952년생. 서울대학교 졸업. 북런던대학과 서울대학교, 한국예술종합학교, 비엔나공과대학 그리고 북경중앙미술학원에서 가르쳤으며 지금은 동아대학교 석좌교수로 있다. 또한, 베니스비엔날레 한국관 커미셔너와 광주디자인비엔날레의 총감독으로 활약한 후, 서울시 초대총괄건축가, 제5기 국가건축정책위원장으로 오랜 공공직무를 마치기도 하였다.
15년간의 김수근 문하를 거쳐 1989년 이로재를 창설하였고, 20세기를 주도한 서구 문명에 대한 비판에서 출발한 '빈자의 미학'이라는 주제를 건축의 중심에 두고 작업하면서 여러 상을 받은 그에게, 미국건축가협회는 Honorary Fellowship을 수여하였으며, 건축가로는 최초로, 국립현대미술관의 ‘2002 올해의 작가’로 선정되었다. 오스트리아 정부는 그에게 2019년 “학술예술 1급 십자훈장”을 수여하였고, 2020년 대한민국 정부는 그의 오랜 문화적 공적을 기려 “은관문화훈장”을 수여하였다. 그는 '빈자의 미학'을 첫번째로 ‘묵상’, ‘Natured’, ‘솔스케이프’ 등, 인문학적 가치의 건축에 관한 많은 책을 저술하기도 한 건축가이다.
Born in 1952, Seung H Sang graduated from Seoul National University, studied at TU Vienna, taught at various schools as a visiting professor, and is currently a chair professor at Dong-A University. After working under Kim Swoo-geun for fifteen years, Seung founded IROJE in 1989. Since then, he has designed and built many architectural works based on the “beauty of poverty,” his central critique of the greed and grandeur inherent to Western materialism. He is also an acclaimed author who has written many books on architecture and the humanities, including The Beauty of Poverty; Architecture, Symbols of Thought; Anything Old Is Beautiful; Inconstant City, Invisible Architecture; Meditation; and Soulscape. Prioritizing the public value of architecture, Seung served as the first Chief Architect of Seoul and as chairman of Korea’s Committee for National Architectural Policy. Among his numerous public awards and honours, he received the First Class Cross of Honour for Science and Art from the Austrian government and the Silver Crown Order of Cultural Merit from the Korean government.
