TERROIR는 1999년 세 명의 태즈메이니아 출신 건축가들이 설립한 건축사무소로, 현대의 문화적·환경적 질문들을 바탕으로 ‘장소’의 개념을 재조명하고자 하는 데서 출발했다. TERROIR는 글, 전시, 출판, 실제 건축 프로젝트를 통해 빠르게 호주 건축 문화의 비판적 참여자로 자리매김했다. 사무소 설립 당시부터 중심이 된 장소성과 환경에 대한 문제는 시간이 지날수록 더욱 시급한 과제가 되었고, 지난 25년 동안 TERROIR가 수행한 작업들은 그만큼 더 큰 의미를 지니게 되었다.
TERROIR의 프로젝트들은 AV Monographs의 “20 International emerging architects”, 파이돈(Phaidon)의 『10×10/3』 및 『21세기 건축 아틀라스』와 같은 국제적 출판물과 전시에 다수 소개되었다. 2007년에는 『TERROIR: Cosmopolitan Ground』라는 단독 모노그래프가 출간되었고, 최근에는 『Instruments』(2019), 『Third Spaces』(2019), 『Territories (2025) 등 세 권의 신간이 발간되었다.
베니스 비엔날레에서도 주목받아, TERROIR는 2008년과 2010년 호주관에 초청되었으며, 2012년에는 덴마크관(‘Possible Greenland’)에 참여했을 뿐 아니라 안소니 버크(Anthony Burke)와 함께 호주관을 공동 큐레이팅했다.
덴마크에서는 도시부(Urban Ministry)와 협업해 연구를 진행했고, 오르후스(Aarhus)에서는 청년 주거 프로젝트를 완공했으며, 국립 자연사 박물관(Statens Naturhistorisk Museum), 트렐레보리(Trelleborg), 몰스 비어(Mols Bjerge) 등 주요 문화 시설 설계 공모에서 최종 후보에 오르기도 했다. 또한 2015년에는 김 웃존 건축사무소(Kim Utzon Arkitekter)와 협력해 스웨덴 말뫼(Malmö)에 세계해사대학교(World Maritime University)의 새로운 본관을 완공했다.
TERROIR was founded in 1999 by three Tasmanians who were interested in a re-examination of place in light of contemporary cultural and environmental questions. TERROIR quickly became a critical participant in Australian architecture culture through writings, exhibitions, publications and built projects. As the issues around place and environment that started the practice have become more acute, the body of work completed over the past 25 years has increased in relevance.
TERROIR projects have been featured in a number of international exhibitions and publications including AV Monographs “20 international emerging architects”, the Phaidon 10x10/3 volume and the Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century Architecture. A monograph on the practice, titled TERROIR: Cosmopolitan Ground was published in 2007 and three new books have been published recently: Instruments (2019), Third Spaces (2019), and Territories (2025). TERROIR have also been featured twice in the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2008 and 2010), were featured in the Danish Pavilion (Possible Greenland) in 2012 and curated the Australian pavilion (with Anthony Burke) also in 2012. In Denmark, TERROIR have undertaken research for the Urban Ministry, completed a youth housing project in Aarhus and have been shortlisted in competitions for major cultural sites including Statens Naturhistorisk Museum, Trelleborg and Mols Bjerge. A new home for the World Maritime University in Malmo was completed in 2015, in collaboration with Kim Utzon Arkiteker.
